Use A Free VPN To Access Websites Such As Netflix Anywhere In the World On iOS, Android, Mac, PC, PS3

By: Marwan, July 3, 2013
I haven't blogged much recently, in fact I haven't done much recently. I was too busy on Netflix watching TV Shows. You can't blame me though. The happiness of getting Netflix working in the Middle East on my iPhone, iPad and PS3 as well as starting my summer break both lead to me spending endless hours a day on Netflix. I decided to stop with the procrastination and share with you how to unblock region-restricted websites on just about any device.

In this article, I'll show you how to unblock Netflix on:

  • iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)
  • Android
  • Mac or PC (preferably running Google Chrome)
  • Play Station 3

iOS Devices

To run Netflix on any iOS device you'll need to download any of the three apps on the App Store developed by Onavo.

Onavo offer you a free VPN that is installed by request of the user after launching the app. The company also promises that it's VPN saves on your data usage, and also provides a more secure way to access the internet.

For free? Where's the catch? There doesn't actually appear to be any catches. Onavo make money by analyzing internet usage and selling this data to other companies. Onavo promise that all data is anonymous. To be safe though, you can disable the VPN when submitting your credit card info to Netflix. I did that then re-enabled the VPN. The service worked perfectly.

You'll need to have VPN turned ON in the settings app on your iPhone whenever you want to access Netflix. The VPN toggle will be visible in the same list as the Airplane mode toggle.

Android, Mac & PC

Yes, all three products can get the same free VPN. For your computer, head over to hola.org and download either the extensions for Chrome and Firefox, or the app for Mac and PC. On PC the app was not as simple as the Google Chrome extension, so I would recommend installing the Google Chrome extension.

You can get the app from the Google Play Store for your Android device for free too. Once set up, you can access the American Play Store too which should be fun!

Hola is free and doesn't use ads. Do they make money, and how? I have no idea. But as long as you use the service safely you shouldn't worry about your data. Just try to disable the VPN when submitting credit card info if you want to ensure that everything will go fine.

Play Station 3

The Play Station 3 is more complicated to set up, but it's worth it. Netflix on PS3 generally provides higher quality playback, and is a lot easier to use. It's also great fun watching on a larger screen. You will have to change the DNS code on your PS3 in order to access Netflix. It appears that these codes constantly change, perhaps once a month. Anyway, the most recent codes in the time of publishing of this article are:

Primary: 190.14.36.90
Secondary: 109.123.111.24

I have embedded a video showing the steps on where to input these codes. If you prefer to read, then read the instructions below the video.

You'll need to go no the Network Settings in the PS3. Continue with the setup like normal. Except chose manual when asked about DNS settings. Then type the DNS codes in. If the codes are updated the maker of the video may update the description, I'll probably update the DNS codes in this article too when required.

Conclusion

This is how to get the American Netflix on almost any device in your house anywhere in the world. The methods are pretty straightforward, but if you need help feel free to ask for help in the comments. If you have any better methods than the ones I shared, or if you know how to enable Netflix on devices I have not mentioned then please share that in the comments too.

Also, it may be useful to know, that by setting up these VPNs you can access many websites that are blocked in your country. So it isn't just Netflix. You can access websites and apps such as Spotify, or even social networks that are blocked in your country.

I hope you find this post useful. I'll share more great tips like this on my blog. In the meantime make sure you share this article with your friends as well as follow my blog on Facebook and Twitter to be the first one receiving the tips.

  1. Thanks for the article. Netflix app is great on Android. If live outside USA, you can use tools like UnoTelly to get Netflix on your Android.
